Polish poultry driven by exports
In 2007, a growing export market was the main factor fuelling the dynamics of Polish poultry and egg production. Stable growth is forecasted in poultry production in 2008, while a further improvement in the foreign trade in shell eggs and egg products is expected.
Dutch poultry man starts GP farm in Hungary
To meet the rapid expansion of the Central and Eastern European market for parent stock, Aviagen is increasing its production capacity for grandparents. One of the newly erected up-to-date contract farms is owned by a Dutch entrepreneur who took on the challenge to move from PS to GP.
EuroTier is on its way
From 11-14 November, the Hanover Exhibition Grounds in Germany will again host EuroTier, the biannual international exhibition for animal husbandry and management. As before, the show will be an international meeting place for the industry, with emphasis on cattle, pig and poultry production. Bio-energy will also receive considerable attention.
Good fertility starts with good testes development
Good testes development is critical for achieving and maintaining fertility levels within a breeder flock. From the early stage of development, right through the entire production period, proper management of the flock is essential for achieving this goal.
Quality feed comes from quality ingredients
The ingredient matrix or formulation is of extreme importance to the pelleting process. Different ingredients have different levels of pelleting ability and require different levels of conditioning to achieve optimum gelatinisation and overall quality of feed. Not only do ingredients play a significant role in pellet degradation, but also design, speed, and type of elevators and conveyors used. Proper quality control is essential.
Wiebe van der Sluis Man with a mission keeps going
Wiebe van der Sluis, an icon in the poultry business, has completed his job as “Mister World Poultry”. He feels that he has been on a mission, doing something he always wanted to do since leaving agricultural college. He may have turned all the pages in this chapter, but an exciting new challenge awaits him.
Interpret ASTs and design anticoccidial programmes
Coccidiosis is a ubiquitous disease, economically very important to the worldwide poultry industry. The most widely accepted method for prevention is the use of anticoccidial products (ionophores and chemicals) in feed. When planning anticoccidial programmes, it is important to know the efficacy of different available anticoccidials against the Eimeria field strains concerned. This can be achieved by Anticoccidial Sensitivity Testing (AST), a method in which sensitivity or resistance of coccidia to particular products is determined.
Proper incubation and hatching for healthy ostriches
Ostriches are very expensive and valuable livestock. Diseases, aberrations and malformations of development may results in deformed chicks. Consequently, high expenses will occur. This can be minimised by taking preventive measures during incubation and hatching.
25 years Cobb 500 Progress in breeding never ends
The Cobb 500 broiler has now been on the market for 25 years. Originating in the UK, it made its breakthrough in the US in the early eighties, after which it also made its entrance on the world market. Let us take a look at a flashback on a period of genetic progress.
